Dirty Roof Cleaning in Spring

Those dark streaks on a shingle roof are algae, and Spring's heat and humidity give it plenty to work with. Here's what causes them and how a soft wash takes care of them.

Where the Streaks Come From

Dirty roofs in Spring usually start the same way. Algae lands on the shingles, settles in on the shady slopes where the roof stays damp after a rain, and starts drawing dark streaks down toward the gutters. Every year the streaks get wider, and from the street the roof starts to look years older than it is.

Under trees, it's usually joined by patches of moss and a scattering of needles and leaves, which hold even more moisture against the shingles.

How We Clean a Roof Like This

  • We look it over first, checking the shingles and noting the plants and beds below the roofline.
  • We apply the soft wash solution at low pressure and give it time to work on the algae and moss.
  • We rinse gently from the top down, with no high-pressure wand.

Because the solution kills the growth instead of just knocking it loose, the shingles come clean without losing the granules that protect them.
